The concept and the tools
Collaborative intelligence , also known as mass collaboration , open online collaboration or user-generated content. The idea arose out of the open source (OS) software movement. Aspiration: ad-hoc groups of like-minded people, working in loosely organised online communities are capable of achieving results previously achievable only by highly organised teams of specialised experts. Main tool: wiki.
A wiki : server-based software that allows users to easily create, edit and link web content from anywhere using any web browser with any number of users. A wiki enables the content and the organisation of that content to be edited. All content can be edited by any user. Wikis have been used by OS techies for some years but wider use of wikis was limited as earlier versions required a level of technical expertise. The latest versions of wikis are (nearly) as easy to use as word processing and email with little or no technical expertise/coding needed. As a result, wikis are increasingly being used by non-techies and in non-high-tech businesses and organisations.
Wikinomics aka 'crowdsourcing': expands the concept and tools of collaborative intelligence to encompass entire organisations, industries and even the entire global population. Theory: collective actions and unfettered individual expression of millions of individuals, properly coordinated, can yield valuable results. Knowledge and wisdom no longer reside just in a small number of highly trained experts ...
